At the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi two years ago Team Isle of Man won two bronze medals – Mark Christian in the track cycling scratch race, and Tim Kneale in the double trap shooting event. Our competitors are all training hard to try and surpass that medal total at the 20th Commonwealth Games between July 23 and August 3, 2014, which will comprise 11 days of competition in 17 sports. According to figures from Global Television and Sunset+Vine – host broadcasters for the next Commonwealth Games – more than one billion viewers could be watching the Games on TV, but there’s no substitute for watching it live in one of the new sporting arenas being built to host the competition. Glasgow is also within easy reach for friends and relatives of Team Isle of Man competitors to travel to support them.
The Glasgow 2014 Games are being billed as Scotland’s largest ever sporting and cultural event and will feature many of the world class competitors from the London 2012 Olympics. The Isle of Man will be one of 70 nations competing at new venues such as the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and iconic locations including Hampden Stadium and Kelvingrove Park. In preparation for the Games, Glasgow is currently undergoing major infrastructure work including a new sports arena which will be one of the largest of its type in Europe and an athletes’ village capable of housing up to 6,500 visitors.
Work in preparation for the Games is going on behind scenes here in the Isle of Man too. The Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association – the organisation responsible for the publicity, fundraising, travel and support for Team Isle of Man’s participation at the Commonwealth Games – is a registered charity and relies upon fundraising events and donations to fund Team Isle of Man’s participation. Fundraising initiatives are being planned in the countdown to Glasgow 2014 and donations to support Team Isle of Man can also be made at www.cga.im
