One of the Island’s cycling stars of the future has received a race season boost thanks to Mann Link Travel.
Tom Mazzone has collected a cheque for £250 from the leading travel company to help support his season riding for one of the best amateur cycling teams in Belgium – Terra Safety Footwear. Tom, who is 20 and from Ramsey, began his career as a five year old riding in the Tuesday night NSC Junior Cycling League and has progressed through the Isle of Man’s cycling ranks to ride for amateur teams on the continent.
Tom now lives for seven months of the year in Belgium, from where he trains full-time and races across Northern Europe. He has already had interest from a professional team who are looking to sign him for the 2015 season.
Tom commented: “I have progressed extremely well over the last 12 months as a rider. I am getting the right opportunities to develop my skills and ride in the right races where, if I get good results, I will get noticed and increase my chances of making it as a professional cyclist. Being based in Belgium, which is renowned as one of the best cycling countries in the world, is undoubtedly the best thing for me but obviously comes at a large financial cost and so I am very grateful to Mann Link Travel for their support in 2014.”
Mann Link Travel is part of the Online Regional Travel Group (ORTG), the largest offshore travel group in the British Isles. Its Chief Executive, Brian Kelly, commented: “The Isle of Man has a history of producing fantastic cycling talent and so I am delighted we are able to support Tom on his road to becoming a professional. I have known him since he was a young boy and have followed his career with interest; it is fantastic to see his hard work and dedication to his sport and training paying off for him. I’d like to wish him the very best of luck for the 2014 season.”
