The five winners with the Minister and Simon Scott

Selected finalists, teachers and invited guests joined at Ballakermeen School at the end of last month for the awards ceremony for the Barclays Wealth & Investment Management Student of the Year Competition.

For the past 16 years, Barclays has sponsored the awards which see students from the Island’s six secondary schools compete across a number of categories to be named ‘Student of the Year’.

Pupils who excel in the five award areas are nominated by their teachers to take part in an interview process with the panel comprising of key members of the Barclays team. 29 finalists were selected and all attended the evening where Simon Scott, Managing Director of Barclays Isle of Man and Minister for Education and Children, Tim Crookall, MHK announced the winners.

The five category prize winners are:
• The Citizenship award – Emma Lloyd-Williams – QEII
• The Arts award – Bronte Wright – Castle Rushen High School
• The Academic award – Dorian Amaral – Ramsey Grammar School
• The Sports award – Laura Kinley – St Ninian’s High School
• The Endeavor award – Megan Webb – Ramsey Grammar School

Each of the shortlisted students were awarded gift vouchers with the winners receiving £500 worth of HMV vouchers.

Simon Scott said: ‘As always, the judging for the 2012 Student of the Year has been very difficult with all of the shortlisted students achieving at the highest levels in their areas of expertise. It is a real honour to be able to meet these extraordinary young people and to reward them for their outstanding efforts. Congratulations to them all.

‘The sponsorship of these awards supports our extensive programme of activities aimed at supporting the local community and young people. We are committed to helping students prepare for entering the work force through our volunteering with Junior Achievement for which we have donated over 300 hours of volunteer time this year. As one of the largest private sector employers in the Island we feel it is important to nurture and develop our possible future employees.’

Mr Crookall, MHK added: ‘Once again I would like to extend our thanks to Barclays Wealth & Investment Management for its ongoing support of the young people of the Isle of Man. I was delighted to meet so many talented students and reward them for their hard work and dedication throughout their school, sporting and community activities.’
