A social media expert from Manx Telecom has been giving advice to Team Isle of Man competitors selected for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Games – which begin on July 23 – will have an estimated global TV audience of around one billion, and social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook will be deluged with updates from competitors, officials, sponsors, journalists and fans.
Alex Barlow, Marketing Assistant at Manx Telecom, gave a 30 minute presentation to some of the competitors selected to represent the Island at a team building day held recently at The Children’s Centre’s Community Farm. With the squad ranging in age from teenagers to over 60s, Alex gave advice on everything from the basic details of how to access social media, to tips on some of the issues to consider when competitors update their social media accounts during the Games.
Manx Telecom is a Team Isle of Man Champion as part of a fundraising initiative launched to support our national squad in the build-up to Glasgow 2014. The initiative was organised by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association – the registered charity responsible for the publicity, fundraising, travel, and support for the Island’s national teams which compete in the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.
Juliet Holt, President of the Association, thanked Alex and Manx Telecom for their support, and said that the social media presentation was very useful as Team Isle of Man members prepare to compete in the Games which will be the focus of media attention around the world.
