MANX LANGUAGE TAKES PRIDE OF PLACE IN 2010 PHONE DIRECTORY

Isle of Man News, 3 February 2010 – The Manx Heritage Foundation has praised Manx Telecom for its continued and “exemplary” support for promoting the local language with traditional words featuring prominently in the new phone book.

Once again, key page headers and other references throughout the 2010 telephone directory appear in both English and Manx, thanks to the translation work carried out by Brian Stowell of the Manx Language Society.

Adrian Cain, the Manx Heritage Foundation’s Development Officer said Manx Telecom’s long term backing was an important factor in ensuring that Manx remained in the public domain.

“Their support has been exemplary and far reaching over many years and the phone book translation of key words proves that the Manx language has a very contemporary use,” said Adrian.

Manx Telecom Commercial Manager Andrew Honour said the 2010 Directory included an unprecedented amount of Manx words and confirmed that the Company would continue to do all it could to keep the Manx Language in the spotlight.

“We take great pride in supporting the Manx Heritage Foundation,” he commented. “Many of our staff are Manx born and raised and it is vitally important that we do all we can to keep local traditions alive throughout the island, whether it be through the phone book, through public events, in our shops or via verbal communication.”
