Jurby Pre-School Nursery has earned the Manx Step Into Quality Award for high standards of care and management. The nursery is run by The Children’s Centre as a not for profit project which benefits the local community. Achieving the award involves assessors carrying out detailed checks that cover a wide range of areas. These checks include reviewing the standards of child care and education provided by the staff, the quality of the nursery’s leadership and management, and where improvements could be made. Assessment continues in the year following the award being obtained to check that progress is maintained. The Manx Step Into Quality Award is supported by Isle of Man College, Isle of Man Department of Education’s Education Improvement Service, Lancashire County Council’s Early Years team, and the Isle of Man Department of Social Care.
Rachel Staley, Head of Early Years and Playwork at The Children’s Centre, said:
“The Jurby Pre-School Nursery was facing closure in September 2012 when The Children’s Centre stepped in to run it. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and achieving this award is a testament to all of the effort and enthusiasm of staff and parents who have worked together to create a nursery which brings many benefits to the community. The nursery and Jurby Primary School work closely together, and the school’s headteacher and staff have also been very supportive. This means that the transition for children moving from the nursery to school is as smooth as possible. Currently, on average 10 children a day attend the nursery, but there is capacity for 16 so we would welcome enquiries from parents whose children want to start this September. The nursery is working towards achieving an Eco-Schools England award and operates trips to the local parks and glens for the children, as well as visits to The Children’s Centre’s Community Farm, to enhance their education.”
Jurby is one of five nurseries run by The Children’s Centre – there are three more in Douglas and one in Ramsey. Four of the five nurseries now have the Manx Step Into Quality Award – Bonwick Day Nursery in Ramsey is currently working towards achieving the accreditation. Organisations that gain the Manx Step Into Quality Award can then move on to be assessed for the full Manx Quality Award. This has eight modules – opportunities and experiences; relationships with children, parents and the wider community; working together as a team; routines; the great outdoors; interactions; meeting everyone’s needs; and management and business – and takes 18 months to two years to complete. All four of The Children’s Centre’s nurseries which have the Manx Step Into Quality are working towards achieving the full award.
