Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessel Ben-my-Chree will help mark the revival of the Douglas Carnival, it has been confirmed.
The vessel will sound its horn at 6.30pm on July 19th to mark the return of the popular festivities to the town.
Douglas Carnival is making a comeback after more than 15 years away, and the Steam Packet Company was delighted to be able to show its support for what promises to be a fun-filled day.
In addition, the Company is sponsoring the ‘Best Float’ category in the carnival. The winner will receive a £500 cash prize, with the runner-up receiving £300 and the third place float receiving £200.
Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: ‘The revival of the Douglas Carnival marks the return of a popular, traditional event for the town and the Island.
‘The Steam Packet Company has enjoyed strong links with Douglas for more than 180 years, so we were delighted to have the opportunity to not only support the carnival, by sponsoring the Best Float category, but to also be part of the festivities by having Ben-my-Chree sound her horn to mark the official launch.
‘Some may remember, at Douglas Carnival in years gone by, Steam Packet Company vessels sounding their horns as they moved in and out of the harbour. I’m pleased we are able to help bring a little bit of nostalgia to the event by recalling those days.’
Town centre manager Michelle O’Malley said: ‘To have this generous sponsorship from the Steam Packet Company opens up all kinds of fundraising opportunities, with entrants perhaps choosing to donate their prize money, should they be among the lucky winners, to their preferred charity. We are truly delighted that the Steam Packet Company has come on board the carnival.’
For float entries application forms are required, but not for bikes or individuals in fancy dress or costume. To find out more contact Michelle by emailing MOMalley@douglas.gov.im, calling 696304 or visiting www.douglascarnival.im.
