Island’s Ambulance Service becomes involved with Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
Isle of Man News, 23 March 2010 – Recently the DHSS Isle of Man Ambulance Service has been working with the Public Health Directorate and other local agencies to raise Health Promotion issues. They are already working with other health care staff and local organisations in relation to the Stroke Association FAST and Know Your Blood Pressure campaigns, and more recently have been assisting with the No Smoking Week here on the Island.
Their latest involvement with the Public Health Directorate is administering the Human Papilloma Virus vaccine (HPV) to 12 to 18 year old females in local schools.
Chief Ambulance Officer, Steve Sieling commented, “The Ambulance Service has a vital role to play in Community based Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, especially as we are already present and used to working in the many communities around the Island. This latest partnership working with our colleagues in Public Health is an excellent example of what can be achieved by working together.”
The role of the Ambulance Service is slowly changing from what traditionally used to be an emergency treatment and transport service, to a service that will provide more treatments in the community by working with and referring between other health care professionals and local agencies. The service is well placed to give advice on accident prevention and health promotion due to the very nature of their work.
