INCA TRAIL RECORD BREAKING FUNDRAISERS RETURN FROM EPIC TRIP
Isle of Man News, 10 December 2009 – It’s one of the world’s most iconic backdrops – the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes.
And this proud party from the Isle of Man are pictured having completed a gruelling four day trek along the world famous Inca Trail Challenge, to reach the hallowed destination.
The group of 35, who all returned safely to the island in recent days, were taking part in a sponsored expedition in aid of The Children’s Centre. The collective effort is expected to raise in the region of £40,000 – the most money ever raised from a single event by the charity organisation.
On arrival in South America and a brief acclimatisation at Cusco, the nearest major city to Machu Picchu, the group braved a combination of scorching hot daytime sun and near freezing night time temperatures as they negotiated the 42 kilometre Trail which was interspersed with several spectacular mountain passes. This included the forbiddingly named Dead Woman’s Pass at an altitude of almost 14,000 feet. The expedition was a mammoth exercise in logistics and coordination, comprising no fewer than 60 porters to haul all tents and equipment as well five mountain guides and a doctor.
Mark Eastham, The Children’s Centre Fundraising Coordinator, who was on the trip, said it had been an unforgettable experience for everyone and an outstanding team effort. “The Inca Trail proved to be much more challenging than any of us expected,” said Mark. “To finally arrive at Machu Piccu, after a four day trek at high altitude and all the months of training and fundraising, was quite an emotional experience. For some people it was the first time they had even been camping but everyone was fantastic helping each other face up to all the challenges of trekking at high altitude in a remote part of the world.
“The Children’s Centre are extremely grateful to everyone involved and to all those who sponsored us on this epic and record breaking trip,” Mark added.
Meanwhile, plans are already under way to stage another exciting fundraising adventure in 2010. The exact destination is still a closely guarded secret and full details will be released in the New Year,
“It’s definitely going to involve a sense of adventure and a head for heights, but more than that I can’t say at the moment,” Mark added.
