In Remembrance: The Freedom Trail across the Pyrenees an evening presentation with supper at Dalby schoolrooms on Friday 8th November at 7.30 pm.
The presentation and slides by Major Charles Wilson offer an insight into a WW2 escape route across the Pyrenees from France to Spain.
The hazardous trail of mountain tracks went through difficult and dangerous terrain guarded by German soldiers. It was used by Servicemen of different nationalities as well as by refugees escaping from Nazi Germany, many of which chose to cross by night in this hostile environment, often wearing only everyday clothing . Many escaped, and many died along the way.
The freedom trail is now a ‘Journey of Remembrance’, organised entirely by the French, with monuments along the way for those who lost their lives. Each year 40 people from all nationalities take part in the journey; this year two Germans are joining the team.
