One of the world’s leading hairdressing trainers has recently visited the Isle of Man to run a unique development programme with staff at Salon 3.
Debbie G, former Creative Director of the Vidal Sassoon academy and stylist for catwalk shows by designers including John Galliano CBE, Jasper Conran, Katherine Hamnett and Rifat Ozbeck, has been working with staff at the Island’s leading training salon for nearly three years to enhance their precision cutting techniques.
As well as working with members of the senior management team including Salon 3’s Directors, Janet Lancaster and Yvonne Karran, Debbie has been working with the more junior members of the team to help develop their skills and expose them to the type of specialist industry training only available in the UK. She began her hairdressing career, which has taken her around the world, more than 35 years ago.
After visiting the Island regularly over an 18 month period, Debbie recently returned to deliver a two-day training programme tailored to the varying skill-sets within Salon 3. This was designed to build on the training she has already delivered, and included mixing up her signature precision cutting technique with a more ‘creative’ approach, transforming long hair styles and bringing current trends from sources such as London Fashion Week into the Isle of Man.
Her training programme is designed to help stylists understand why hair should be cut in a certain way, and not just how to do that. This will be further developed in-house through Salon 3’s unique Academy programme which is led by Janet, herself a multiple award-winning stylist, trainer and assessor, at its new base on Victoria Street.
Debbie commented: “Since I began working with the team at Salon 3, the difference in them is immense. We began our journey together in 2011 because Janet and Yvonne wanted their staff to take a step back, learn the Vidal Sassoon classic cuts and, with that, the art of precision cutting. It is amazing to see how they have embraced their training to the extent it is now part of their working culture. It’s also been fantastic to work with the juniors to go back to basics and teach them the Vidal Sassoon classics – they have some incredibly talented staff who will go very far in their careers.
“Investment in training for any hairdresser is key, even for salon owners; you can motivate your team for at least six months with one exceptional session. You never, ever stop learning in this industry and any stylist’s goal is ultimately to become a master, which is near impossible. The Salon 3 team are so fortunate that Janet and Yvonne place such an emphasis on, and invest so much in, their development. I can’t wait to return to the Isle of Man later in 2014 to see how they’ve taken my latest training onboard.”
Salon 3’s Creative Director, Janet Lancaster, commented: “Debbie G is one of the world’s exceptional hairdressing trainers and motivators, and we are so fortunate that Salon 3 continues to benefit from her expertise and unique approach to stylist development. I myself still take a huge amount from her work and, personally, it makes me very proud to see how our team is taking what they learn and adopting it into their every day work. The difference Debbie is making to the standard of hairdressing in the Isle of Man is immense, and I’m delighted our clients are benefitting from this.”
