This summer’s Commonwealth Games are now a giant step closer after the visit to the Island of the ‘Big Trainer’. The giant inflatable training shoe is being used to promote interest in the Glasgow 2014 Games. It stopped off in the Isle of Man as part of a tour to nations and territories which will compete at the event this summer. Its journey took in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey and, of course, the host nation. The inflatable was also promoting participation in Sport Your Trainers Day which took place on March 10, which is also Commonwealth Day. Everyone in competing nations and territories was encouraged to wear training shoes to work or school to show their support for the Games.

During the Isle of Man leg of its journey the Big Trainer visited Laxey Wheel and the nearby Salmon Lake Centre. It was accompanied by three young Manx gymnasts – Nicole Burns, Mukunda Measuria, and Grace Harrison – who are all hoping to win selection for Glasgow 2014, and Clyde the official Glasgow 2014 mascot.

Claire Clague, Centre Manager for the Salmon Lake Centre, said:

“We were thrilled to be able to offer our facilities to support such an exciting initiative in the run up to the Commonwealth Games. Our lake offers great photo opportunities of the iconic Laxey Wheel and we were more than happy to help promote the Island’s sporting talents.”

Juliet Holt, President of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association, said:

“We were delighted to be involved in the Sport Your Trainers campaign for 2014, it really brought home the fact that the countdown to Glasgow 2014 is gathering pace. As a proud sporting nation there’s huge anticipation about the Games here in the Isle of Man and everyone is getting behind the campaign.”

The Isle of Man’s team for Glasgow 2014 will be announced on May 8, and there is a gala fundraising evening featuring the Bond quartet at the Villa Marina on May 16. For tickets to the event go to http://cfvg.gov.im/
