DAVE’S LEAP OF FAITH PAYS OFF

Dave Parker Bungee JumpIsle of Man News, 29 October 2009 – For someone used to parachuting, you’d think doing a sponsored bungee jump for The Children’s Centre would be as easy as falling off a log.

But when Dave Parker found himself standing on a crane perched 165 feet above the Royal Manx Show, he wondered if he’d lost his senses.

Luckily, Dave, who in the past has leapt out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft 10 times in the name of charity, held his nerve and went through with the big plunge.

His leap of faith certainly paid off, raising £920 for The Children’s Centre – the single largest amount raised for the organisation from the event.

“I’d still rather jump out of plane than from a crane,” confessed Dave who works as an HGV driver for Douglas Corporation’s Cleansing Department.

The 53 year old was given huge support from his work colleagues and from the Manx Legion who between took care of the lion’s share of the sponsorship. Additional funds came from Dave singing at a couple of pub karaoke nights.

Over the years he’s raised thousands of pounds for charity from the static line parachute jumps and his big ambition is to do a 14,000 foot tandem skydive.

“In particular, I’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone I work with and the Legion who really supported me,” said Dave from Quines Corner, Douglas. “The Children’s Centre is a very good cause which Is why so many people backed me on the jump.”

The Charity’s Fundraising Coordinator Mark Eastham, who organised what proved to be the Isle of Man’s highest ever bungee, described Dave’s fundraising efforts as “outstanding”.

“It just shows what can be achieved with a bit of hard work and determination,” said Mark. “It was an outstanding effort by Dave to raise so much money and from The Children’s Centre thank you to everyone who supported him so generously.”
