Summerhill Glen worked its winter wonderland magic when it provided the setting for a pre-Christmas marriage proposal from Dean Harn to Jolene Fisher (with a little help from Douglas Borough Council’s electrical services section).

30-year-old Mr Harn, a chef at the Sefton Hotel, pulled all the stops out to make the occasion memorable, arriving in style in a limousine at the glen where a candle-lit path led him and Miss Fisher, 24, a waitress at the Colby Glen Hotel, to the spot where tea lights spelled out ‘I Love You’ and where ‘Jolene, Will You Marry Me?’ had been projected onto a wall.

‘I met Jolene in Tenerife,’ said Mr Harn, ‘and we’ve been going out for five years. She said Summerhill Glen was her favourite spot in the Isle of Man as it’s very romantic so I thought it would be the perfect setting to ask her to marry me.

‘I’d like to thank the Council and the electrical services team who were really helpful. I loved all the lighting effects and how the message was projected and it was all worthwhile because Jolene said “yes”’.

Regeneration and community advisory committee lead member Councillor Stephen Pitts said: ‘I am delighted that Summerhill Glen has provided the perfect setting for Dean’s proposal to Jolene. The electrical services section is to be congratulated on devising all manner of creative lighting effects that have been attracting large numbers to the glen over the Christmas and New Year period.

‘Dean and Jolene are, of course, also to be congratulated on their engagement and on behalf of the Council I wish them every happiness for their future together.’

In time for Christmas 2013 the electrical services team installed additional decorative lighting and 25 ‘fairy doors’ of mixed designs attached to trees along the main path, built in-house three seats made from recycled oil drums, created 10 coloured lights, also in-house, out of waste metal and plastic bottles and improved access to the glen from Summerhill Road.

The Summerhill Glen illuminations will remain on each evening until the end of the first week of January 2014.
