Plans to promote the long-term economic future of the Island’s capital will be on display at a public exhibition this week.

The Draft Masterplan for Central Douglas has been commissioned by the Isle of Man Government to encourage investment and support the Department of Economic Development’s Vision 2020 strategy.

IBI Taylor Young, an architecture, urban design, planning and landscape practice, has been appointed to lead this important commission.

In February the consultants held two stakeholder workshops to gather views and to start to look at the opportunities for how the town can develop in the future. The views and ideas have been brought together with base line information and a Draft Masterplan has been prepared for consultation.

The Draft Masterplan will be displayed at a Public Exhibition in the Strand Shopping Centre, Strand Street, Douglas on the following dates and times:

  • Wednesday 14 May 2pm to 5.30pm
  • Thursday 15 May 10am to 5.30pm
  • Saturday 17 May 10am to 2pm

The Government would welcome your views and officers will be on hand to answer questions.

John Shimmin MHK, Minister for Economic Development and Chairman of the Central Douglas Masterplan Committee, said: ‘We asked for a Masterplan to help support the Government’s Vision2020 strategy, which outlines the economic plan for the Isle of Man’s future. I believe we now have a robust practical draft plan which will complement this objective. To date we have brought partners together to help achieve development opportunities and to ensure that central Douglas’ contribution to economic growth and the quality of life on the Island are maximised.’

David Christian MBE, leader of Douglas Borough Council, said: ‘The Council has been working with Government on the Draft Masterplan. We want to see our Douglas economy grow and in order to do that we need to look to the future. We want the centre of Douglas to be an exciting and dynamic place to visit, shop, and do business in; a capital to be proud of.’
