Isle of Man News, 15 February 2010 – The Public Health Directorate of the Department of Health and Social Security is organising a campaign to raise awareness of Norovirus and to provide guidance on prevention / containment. Norovirus outbreaks have led to the closure of a large number of hospital wards in the UK.
A leaflet and poster have been produced for Island-wide circulation.
The Department of Education has distributed copies of the leaflet, poster and a flow chart showing guidance on how to deal with vomiting and diarrhoea in a school setting to all Head teachers.
Presentations are also being held for various professional groups (e.g. staff of nursing and residential homes) to raise awareness and to provide guidance on tackling the virus in their occupational setting.
It is hoped that as a result of all these efforts, major outbreaks of diarrhoea and vomiting caused by Norovirus, which in part has lead to hospital ward closures, could be avoided.
